Remorse is memory awake,
Her companies astir--
A presence of departed acts
At window and at door.
It's past set down before the soul,
And lighted with a match,
Perusal to facilitate
Of its condensed despatch.
Her companies astir--
A presence of departed acts
At window and at door.
It's past set down before the soul,
And lighted with a match,
Perusal to facilitate
Of its condensed despatch.
---from the poem by Emily Dickinson, 1863
These lines from the Emily Dickinson poem discuss how remorse brings the past ever before us. It keeps past deeds around us, like something bothering us at our windows and doors. Dickinson describes what humans often call a "gnawing sense" that comes with some emotions. Though this is a short synapsis, I do not believe I am entirely without expertise in analyzing this poetic section.
